About Us

The Junction is an a cappella vocal group from The Netherlands, formed by five devoted vocalists. They share a passion for vocal harmonies and tight rhythms, while translating modern songs and classics into their own compositions. Their voices are used as strong and expressive instruments, switching from modern jazz harmonies to crazy hip hop beats, and from dazzling solos to tight vocal percussion.
In 2013 The Junction performed at Vokal Total Festival in Graz, winning the award for Best Jazz Arrangement for Singin’ in the Rain. In September they went on a concert tour in South Korea and to top off the year, the group was support act for band Handsome Poets’ national Club Tour. In 2014 the group toured with Dutch symphonic orchestra Ricciotti Ensemble, and hit a wide variety of stages. The Junction was also invited to perform on several a cappella events in Germany, slowly building up their fan base abroad.

At the start of 2015 the singers were invited to perform at the ITB International Choir Competition in Indonesia, where they toured, gave concerts and master classes. In May, the group won the prestigious international vocal group competition at the Aarhus Vocal Festival in Denmark.
Recently, The Junction has released its debut album ‘Right Down The Road’.

Isa is the high soprano of The Junction. She began her musical career by studying piano in her home city, Barcelona, where she completed her bachelor in piano, and also got classical singing education. After all these years dedicated to classical music, she felt like she needed a twist. She moved to Amsterdam in 2012 and she is now finishing her bachelor in jazz voice at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. If you would ask her what kind of music she likes the most, she’d probably not know what to answer. She gets her inspiration from classical composers, from old and new jazz voices like Sarah Vaughan, Billy Holiday and Esperanza Spalding. She also feels strongly connected to Mediterranean culture and music, never forgetting her roots.

Margriet is the mezzo-soprano in the TJ-family. Thanks to her breezy warm sound she gives the group an airy twist. She can purr like a kitten but you might be surprised to find she can also roar like a lion, a sound she discovered during one of her many musical journeys through the African continent. Meanwhile she studied jazz vocals at the Royal Conservatory where she fell in love with the music of Ella, Chet, Billie and Miles and is also truly inspired by Roisín Murphy. Now she’s taken up residence on the waters of Amsterdam in her very own houseboat. One of her lifelong pleasures is the anatomy of the voice and voice technique programs: she loves to experiment with new tricks and sounds.

Joyce-Lou is the Junction’s tuning fork and provides their ear food with a soulful and jazzy alto sauce. Speaking of ears, Joyce-Lou has a well-developed big pair of those, thanks to her jazz-education at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and thanks to her aunt, who pierced her ears and gave her earrings when she was just a baby of 6 months old. This half Dutch half Asian girl loves to daydream, noodle lovely long vocal lines and bake her own musical pies with ingredients of her liking. Joyce is very inspired by jazz horn players from back in the days, such as Dexter Gordon, Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard in a fusion of Beyoncé, Usher and some good hip-hop. All fresh, organic and pure of course.

Henk‘s musical career started with playing the harmonium as a child, however he felt relieved to switch to the piano soon. At home and in church, ensemble singing was a natural thing to do. Still he had to overcome a career as a jurist first to find out that his heart and true talents lie in music. After studying in Utrecht and New York, he won the 2013th edition of the Dutch Jazz Vocalists Competition. Whatever role you ask him to play in TJ, he’s up for it, whether singing bass lines, warm timbered solos or tenor choir parts. Henk finds musical inspiration in Take6, Sting, U2, John Coltrane, Avishai Cohen and his fellow Junctioneers. He is always eager to get the harmonies even tighter than tight and the voices super-connected to have them blended as one blast of sound.

Jasper is TJ’s bass-machine who adds some funky basslines and slick beats to the bottom of the TJ-sound. Jasper is always striving to get all the smallest details of the music spot on, perhaps that’s because of his background in music education and music theory. His passion for a capella is beyond limits and this is why he can never hide his enthusiasm during gigs or even rehearsals. Some of his major sources of inspiration are The Real Group, Accent, Take6, Count Basie and Dirty Loops.

The Junction works with young and ambitious vocal coach Merel Martens, who is internationally known for her conducting skills and vocal arrangements.
